Solar Thermal Water Heating, 1 - 3 Occupants

Single panel solar collector Green Bay, WI
This two occupant home is served perfectly by this flush-mounted solar domestic water heater. In this this application, the solar fluid is circulated by a DC pump powered by photovoltaic panel. Look close, it is a small square just to the right of the thermal collector.

Hey!  A 100 Percent Renewable Energy Producing Device!

It should be noted the owners had an intense aesthetic desire. This GreenSky Energetics installation enhanced this desire.

This Whitelaw Wisconsin flush-mounted to the roof single collector system has the neat appearance of a skylight. This mounting position will be more acceptable to those customers having an aesthetic desire.

Here is a rule of thumb; every square foot of thermal collector can heat one gallon of water to 120 degrees in four hours of sunlight. In four hours of sunshine, this 4' x 10' collector can meet a day's worth of hot water requirements for two occupants.

High above the gorund is this perfectly seam mounted collector servicing this 3 story 2 occupant household.

Our Master Plumber was happy to move the water heater to a new location - allowing for heated water to be sent to its final destination quickly and efficiently.

This system sports a stylish black pump station located to the left of the picture. Notice the temperature gauge orbs and the digital read-out. The solar storage tank is indicated by the solar loop entering the bottom where the internal heat exchanger is positioned.

Take notice of the tree branches casting a shade on the snow below the collectors.

The owner was certain that he did not have enough sunlight to be able to install a solar heating device. But one quick check with the Solar Pathfinder verified that the upper right hand corner of his attached garage had 100 percent open sun window - even during winter solstice.

The owner was very surprised and immediately took steps to have this device installed.

                                                                Story

The engineer owner of this solar water heater did investigate the components and operating performance of solar domestic water heaters very thoroughly, before putting ink to the contract.

The design incorporated a special tank that has the internal heat exchanger for the solar loop, as well as an electrical element serving as the primary heating. Normally this design is reserved for tight spaces that can not fit a separate solar storage tank.

Our Master Electrician installed a switch enabling this engineer to experiment with turning off the electrical service during those times of excess sunlight. Even in Wisconsin this does happen on occasion!

Port Washington, Wisconsin

Single Panel Solar Heating System, Port Washington WI, Wisconsin
The south side gable of this house was shaded by a very wide-shade casting maple tree to the east, and to the west, a tall hickory tree (it is just too beautiful to have it removed). The south of the house couldn't be counted on as a possible location for a solar thermal situation.

The owner, an engineer by trade, decided to mount this single collector in a horizontal fashion up and down the north side of the west slope opposite of the road (it can not be seen from the road laying out east of the house).

Owner sent a note indicating high satisfaction with the quality of our work and friendliness of the installation crew.

*New information; met with the owner recently and he reported 170+ degree water temperatures in his solar loop - BTU powerhouse! Both the "his and her" equation to this situation was all smiles!

Manawa, Wisconsin

Manawa Commercial Solar Air Heating System
This Manawa customer had a row of very stately old silver maples draping it's shade on their house through-out the period between Fall and Spring Equinox. This prohibited a house roof mount of the solar thermal collector. The next best location was on their garage and then trenching the solar loop over to the house. The job was completed in a timely fashion with very happy customers concerning the tightness of the installation.

It is interesting to note the orientation of the garage roof's slope was facing southwest, hence the diagnol installation of the directly south-facing solar collector on the roof.

Manitowoc, Wisconsin

Manitowoc Rapids, Wisconsin

This 4ft x 8ft single collector solar domestic water heating system produces 32 gallons of solar heated water in every 4 hours of sunshine. This environmentally conscious single occupant  will be supplied with more than the 20 gallons an average person uses.

The system cannot be seen from ground level and the home owner decided to save the labor cost that would otherwise have been necessary to install the solar loop through the attic.

This install was a cheapy!

This is a single 4' x 10' solar thermal collector designed as a pressurized closed loop using a solar fluid with a freeze protection of minus 28 degrees. Even a colder temperature has very little chance of causing burst damage to the copper pipes as there is 8 hours before the expansion of the frozen fluid. At sun-up, and even on cloudy days, the system will receive enough radiation from the sun to warm things up.

Experienced GreenSky installers fashioned this collector as a flush-mount. Alongside the solar thermal collector is a photovoltaic panel (on right upper picture). Not only is the sun heating the solar fluid as it circulates through the collectors, but it also produces the electricity that powers the pump.

This 100 percent solar device has satisfied the energy security concerns of this customer. It will provide nearly 100 percent of their hot water between spring and fall equinox, and around 50 percent during the winter.

The reduced electrical load saves the environment 1.07 tons of green house gases per year.

It is interesting this home owner had installed a solar air heating system in the late 70s (the four collector solar array on the left middle picture). The air system is working perfectly and after evaluating the various parts, it became very apparent this system would continue to operate at a high efficiency for years to come.

The old cabin is on the property and wanted to share this delightful picture of it!

Brillion, Wisconsin

Solar Water Heating System in Brillion WI Wisconsin

This Brillion Wisconsin customer had purchased a solar air heater in 1983 for $2900. 25 years later, not only was this system producing a huge amount of heat, but the cost of this system is now $5000+ more than he paid for it! Now that is real asset appreciation and makes the point that waiting to purchase a solar heating device will not save you any money.

The GreenSky installed single horizontally positioned solar water heater - located to the right of the solar air collectors - will heat enough water for this two occupant home.

Manitowoc, Wisconsin

Solar Water Heating System in Whitelaw, Wisconsin

The installation of this solar domestic water heating system went exceptionally smooth. The owner saved some money by prepping the job site for the solar loop. It is interesting to note the owner also had purchased a new hot water heater and had it ready in his basement - of which we installed for free.

Richard reported that the owner of this system had strong feelings that the economy has bottomed and feels he is "ahead of the curve" in purchasing this device now.
