Solar Forced Air

Manitowoc, Wisconsin

Valders, Wisconsin, WI

This is the home of the founder of Greensky Energetic's, Richard Larson. This three collector solar air heating system is capable of heating up to 2100 square feet.

The system is controlled by first sending heat into the house. When it reaches the desired temperature automatic dampers are employed shutting off the warm supply air into the house and diverting the heated air into the basement.

This retired farmer had thoughts of lessening his work load in having to cut, stack, and feed his woodburner with wood for heating and was thus interested in using the sun's energy to heat his home.

However, there were some challenges, namely, the tree situated directly to the south of his house -being a favored place to lounge - which took the south facing gable out of the picture for a vertical wall mount. That left one option, a peak mounted system. This customer is extra happy with the solar hot air system's operation.

Dual Solar Thermal Air System installed on a 900 square foot house. Manual dampers allow the owner to supply heated air to the house, or basement, where excess heat can be stored and used well after the sun has gone down.

Owner reports system working very well.

Easiest install is a simple return and supply on the opposing wall. The owner reporter high satisfaction with the heating ability of this single 4' x 8' commercial solar air heater. Cost to install this simple wall mounted unit was $3750.

These 3 solar air collectors are mounted in a series and share air. The manufacturer actually custom-built these as some homes will have a unique ducting route that needs to be accomodated. Every collector uses baffles to force the air to serpentine through-out. This is called "scrubbing the corners".

If you think about it, if there was a direct line from the return to the supply, the majority of the circulating air would make a beeline between them.

Mobile homes can get in on the action too. The smaller heating space and high insulation values (the newer homes of course) will manage quite nicely with one single wall mounted heater.

GreenSky can even install a smaller version of the commercial solar air collector we normally install. However, it must be noted this thinner profile low tech collector produces only a 10th of the British Thermal Units. Cost installed was $1750.

This antique log home was re-assembled and is the most perfect such home I have ever seen. The owner did this work and exhibits his high quality of workmanship.

The issue then was how to utilize the sun's energy without compromising the home's integrity. Well, you can see for yourself.

Met up with the the other owner last spring and she was gushing to report on the performance of this single commercial solar air heater.

GreenSky had installed this system last year and 10/7/09 was my first opportunity to stop and take a picture. As you can see, it was late and the flash of the camera is reflecting on the collector. Please also notice the small square above the 4' x 8' solar air heater - it is a photovoltaic panel that utilizes the sun's energy to produce the electricty the powers the blower. 100 percent renewable energy producing device.

During the time taking this picture, did have a nice conversation with the owner. He said there was one sunny -15 degree day when this single collector heated the whole house without the furnace turning on. The main house was at 73 degrees and he made this direct comment, "this one day alone was worth the price".

This roof mounted single solar air heater is well positioned to keep the receptionist toasty warm on sunny days. Just visit about noon time to see the big smile on her face!

All roof mounted collectors are installed in a spanner and spacer method. The spanner is in the form of square steel tubing and are placed up against the roof trusses in the attic - the entire length of the collector. The feet, on which the collector is mounted, is connected to the spanner using fully threaded stainless steel rod. We do not lag into the trusses!

In this manner, all of the trusses between the feet are supporting minimizing wind and dead load.

The feet also positions the collector off of the roof. Otherwise, a dam is created and the thawing and freezing of water will eventually lead to a leaky roof. See the picture, the separation is very noticable, no leaky roof in this method of installation.  Also notice the ducting is insulated and protected with exterior PVC casing. We install every collector to last a long time.

One other feature to point out: the blower is powered by a photovoltaic panel. This is truly a 100 percent renewable energy producing device.

Oftentimes prospective customers ask what can be accomplished if the south facing gable is shaded. This picture will answer that question!

Garage-mounted solar air heater is drawing air from the basement and returning it fully heated by the sun. The ductwork is attached to the garage wall and both return and supply enters the basement through the sill.

Look at the 2 small squares mounted next to the solar air heater. They are photvoltaic panels that convert the sun's radiation into DC electricity; and is used to power the blower that circulates the air through the system.

The owners of this house yard full of ducks and goats will not be going hungry any time soon! And now that they have installed this BTU powerhouse, their fuel supplier may be stopping in for dinner.

Is there a doctor in this house? Absolutely, and since he had a solar domestic water heater already installed, the next best choice was to use the sun to heat the air in his house.

This really looks good!
